One of the most important things we do here at North Bay Ford is helping our commercial clients succeed and grow over time. As a business, we know how important it is that you have the right tools and resources available to you so you can get your job done, which includes a vehicle or fleet that is ready to deliver. Ford understands that, too, which is why they make remarkable commercial vehicles like the Transit cargo van, which is perfect for helping you accomplish a wide range of tasks. When you go looking for a Ford Transit for sale, however, you’ll quickly discover that you have two main options to choose from: the Ford Cargo Van and the Ford Passenger Van. So, what’s the difference between these two vans, and which one is right for your business? Let’s dive in.

The Simple Answer and Ford Transit Basics

Perhaps the simplest way to decide on which of these two vans is right for your business is to consider what you need to be able to do and go from there. The basic functionality of these two vans is right in their names: the Ford Transit Cargo van is designed for moving cargo, while the Transit Passenger van is intended for transporting numerous people to a destination. From the outside, both models look a lot alike, though the passenger version has rear windows for people to see out of, while the cargo model does not. If you’re delivering items to your clients, your cargo doesn’t need to be able to look outside (and you probably don’t want others looking in).

For the 2024 model, Ford offers three different Transit vans: a single Cargo van and two different Passenger models. This keeps things pretty simple, but they’re also only jumping-off points for this van, and there are numerous configurations available for both of them. You also have plenty of options for customizing them and making them work for your business, with accessories and equipment that let you put together the right vehicle to get your job done. Let’s take a closer look at these two vehicles to see what they offer, and you’ll get a better sense of which one can meet your needs.

If you want to offer delivery for your customers or you’re interested in getting a lot of tools and equipment to different job sites, then the 2024 Ford Transit Cargo van is a great choice. It’s powered by a 3.5L V6 engine that provides 275 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, which is paired with a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. If you’re looking for more power from your van, then there’s a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine available with 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard for the Transit Cargo van, but all-wheel drive (AWD) is available; plus, you can choose between different roof heights and lengths to put together the right van with everything you need.

You can choose between Regular models with a 130-inch wheelbase or Long models that have a 148-inch wheelbase—a Long-EL option has the same wheelbase length but is extended for more space inside. The longer versions are the perfect choice if you need more room inside your van. Ford also offers three different roof heights for the Transit Cargo van: low, medium, and high. These options give you numerous combinations to choose from so you can get the perfect model with the kind of interior space you need. Some examples of the space you can get:

  • Regular/Low: 126-inch Cargo Length; 246.7 cu.ft. of Cargo Volume
  • Long/Medium: 143.7-inch Cargo Length; 357.1 cu.ft. of Cargo Volume
  • Long-EL/High: 172.2-inch Cargo Length; 487.3 cu.ft. of Cargo Volume

What you do with the space available to you inside the Ford Transit Cargo van depends entirely on what you need from your vehicle. Standard features include air conditioning for your driver and passenger up front, vinyl seating, and a four-inch Infotainment display. A number of upgrades are available, however, including a digital rearview mirror for enhanced visibility while driving, a 12-inch Infotainment system that makes it easier to stay connected with others, and cloth seating with power-adjustable seats for added comfort. The Ford Transit also comes with a wide range of safety features to protect you and your cargo on the road.

As far as the cargo space itself, you have many different options to make it exactly what you require for your business. The open interior can be outfitted with a wide range of storage solutions, including shelves, bins, and cargo nets to keep things in place. You can add lighting and even refrigeration systems if you need to deliver products cold, or create a custom storage solution that perfectly meets your needs. Just be sure to consider how much cargo you want to move and choose a model with enough room inside.

Get to Know the 2024 Ford Transit Passenger Van

You have two different models of the Ford Transit Passenger van available to you, but you can think of them as two trim levels for this model. This one is powered by the same 275-hp V6 engine, with the EcoBoost engine available to boost performance, just like the Cargo model. You’ll generally find the same performance features and options across both models, plus numerous configuration choices here too. You can choose from Regular, Long, and Long-EL lengths along with Low, Medium, and High roof heights.

This impacts the kind of space you get inside upfront and for your passengers. For example, a low roof gives you about 41 inches of headroom up front and about 38.7 inches of headroom for passengers back in the fourth row. Going with a high roof, on the other hand, gives your fourth-row passengers 65.2 inches of headroom, so there’s much more room for them to be comfortable. Similarly, Long and Long-EL models can have five rows of passenger seating, while the Regular length doesn’t allow for this, which can make the difference between seating for 12 or 15 people inside the Transit Passenger van.

The features you get on this van depend on the model and options you choose. If you go with the XL, then you’ll get standard interior air conditioning, basic interior lighting, a four-inch Infotainment screen up front, and vinyl seating. Available options let you upgrade this interior to include things like adaptive cruise control, a 12-inch Infotainment screen, and an eight-speaker sound system to provide entertainment for your passengers. Every model comes with great safety technology including a Forward Collision Warning and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking to help keep your passengers safe. Available upgrades include a Blind Spot Information System, a 360-degree Camera with Split View, and Reverse Brake Assist to protect your passengers even more.

Which Ford Transit Model Is Right for You?

Finding the right Ford Transit van is fairly easy as long as you take things one step at a time and make decisions based on what you need. First, consider whether you want to transport cargo or people, and then choose either the Cargo or Passenger van based on that. From there, you can decide which engine meets your needs and then choose the roof height and van length that is right for you based on how much stuff or people you want to be able to accommodate. You can then choose the right combination of interior features and options to provide the kind of experience you need, plus further customize things with interior storage solutions and more. This is still a lot of decisions to make, even when you approach it in a simple way, which is why it can help to work with a dealership that puts the needs of your company first. That way, you can rest assured that you have the right van to keep you on the road to success.
